About us

Sandwell African Women Association (SAWA) is a local registered charitable organization (Charity Number: 1166949). It was formed in September 2014 out of a desire to support, restore, empower and bring hope to African refugee women and children affected by wars, sexual violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, survivors of torture and deprived of human rights in their homelands.

The group provides advice, support and training to disadvantaged African women refugees and children from the Sandwell area, Birmingham, Walsall, Dudley and Wolverhampton.  It delivers a range of services to improve safety, access to justice and well-being of women and children in Sandwell and helps homeless people through education, accommodation, and support as well as supporting young people who face barriers to work.

Our priority is to invest in disadvantaged African women and children and to give them assistance in their daily needs regardless of their religion, race, nationality or gender. Our work is to help African women refugees, migrants and asylum seekers who have been affected by wars, famine, disease, violence, poverty or human rights violations to positively reshape and restore their lives in a new land of exile. We specifically focus on supporting affected African refugee women, poor African migrant women and marginalized African children through our cross-cutting programs by providing them with support with education; healthcare; human right, advocacy and social assistance.

We exist to help the affected African women and African children refugees to integrate in the community and aspire for a better future, to technically support the feminine development initiative actions and projects as well as to network and partner with other organizations and community based organizations, associations and individuals to provide effective supportive intervention and assistance where most needed. These women and children  face multiple barriers to entering employment, due to the length of time they have been out of work, the level of proficiency in English and lack of proof of or recognition of their previous qualifications.

SAWA is more engaged in the services of supporting, restoring and bringing hope to refugee women and children and our desire is that we address their suffering at an early stage rather than later during escalation, and this, in an appropriate, culturally sensitive and caring manner.
